Off cuts?

Was just thinking today about the off cuts of tiles when you finish a job. Do you all like me leave them with the customer or do some of you take them away? If you do take them where do get rid of them? Or do any of you charge to take them with you?

I just explain to customer that i cant get rid of them cos i cant go on the tip without a permit and even then its only my own personal waste i can get rid of.

Was wondering if i was maybe missing a trick, is there a way i can offer to get rid of the tiles and make some money?

explain that it costs too much to get a dumping permit and they can get them uplifted for zilch

quite often on domestic jobs I'll loan the customer my trailer, if they have a towbar they can take all the waste to the local civic amenities tip, if not, I'll take it for them using my car and just add the time onto my day rate charge

If you have a van and carry rubbish you need a waste transfer licence

If you take any waste away without a permit you will get a hefty fine - and you will get caught.
Leave it all bagged for the customer to dispose of - or charge for a skip (£60/£140).
The only off cuts I take away are for my own use to be re cut into strips ie. Travertine or Geometric pieces to be reused.
Most time storage is an issue and then it costs you money to acquire a skip to clear the store!

local council here now charges per item,no more free uplifts so if its small amount i advise them to take to tip if its a rip out i get a skip

always have a line in your quotation that says, Customer is responsible for all waste

I leave offcuts for customer to dispose of. I also state on my estimates 'Waste disposal not included'

The way I've always looked at it is if the materials are supplied by the customer it's their waste. If I supply it then it's mine. I think that's the legal standpoint too. The problem is it's difficult to get rid of waste free if you have a van as it's looked on as commercial waste.

I did a job recently where the customers used a Hippobag for a ripped out kitchen. A bag is delivered (as opposed to a skip) and lifted by a Hiab truck when you're ready and it's reasonably priced.

I have a deal with a skip hire company that allows me to have a skip at my yard/lockup and they only pick it up when it's full. I then offer to dispose of their waste as part of the install, so they have a choice.

i only started lending customers my trailer when I had to standby and watch a 78 year old man load waste into the back of his car (yes I helped him load it) and then he had to take it on his own down to the tip. At 200 sheets a skip that you're not even going to quarter fill I think my way is both legal and appealling to customers.

I normally leave waste but i try to remember to explain to the customer beforehand that i can't take waste without charging, if it's going to be more than a few bags of offcuts (if we are removing existing tiles or large areas of plasterboard) then i give them the option of a skip, the smallest skips in Chorley are just under £60 and they'll cover your way Lee.

i have a line on my estimate stating waste removel is not included but i do bag it all up and leave it where the customer requests
