opening up mosaics

i am practising some designs with mosaics at home at the moment and i was hoping for a bit of advice from the mosaic experts on here.

when you are forming curves for a fan pattern or a circle, what would you say should be the maximum gap/width at the widest part of the of the mosaic on the curve?

That's a good question, the times that I've had to have always mostly taken ages, fiddly tryingto balance the size of the tile and the radius to get the best look, tbh I don't like doing it unless it's been made to measure so to speak.

In my opinion Ed, i like to keep the grout-lines all the same size,so will involve cutting individual tesserae to size, IMO it looks so wrong when there are v-large grout-lines or to small or even a mix, i look for uniformity .......... so tapering as you go,if that make sense

As DPF sez, you have to size them in rows to create the shape.. closing in the tesserae sizes to keep it even... easy once you get going Ed.

Yep really Ed , if Dean is about he -has played a lot with mosaics on his superb seat/pebble ,shaped creation ! perhaps he would post a few pic's here of it !!

on pic 3, you can see that the grout line opens the more acute the radius becomes so this is a good example of what i am asking...

so, should i aim for tapererd 'voissour' cuts in order to keep the grout lines straight when the circle becomes very small.. that way i avoid triangular grout lines..


its easier to keep everything uniform when the circle is big, its when the circles get really small that concerns me most..

If you are really finicky at sizing the tesserae Ed , then you can trim to get straight grout lines or as dean has done you can open up... No 2 installers work the same , so use a method that suits and works for you.

I am no expert on the subject. In my mind there is no set way of doing it. If you can keep your joints in line around a curve you are a better man than me. I just mess about with it really I don’t do to many jobs for the rich and famous and it is not my day to day job so I think going with DPF advice will be your best bet. It would be nice of him if he could put up some pics of a curve with straight joints.

To be honest ED a lot of it depends on the material you are working with and the look you are trying to achieve I like to experiment and these are a few methods on the same piece (just something me and my girls have been messing with)

see what you mean about open to interpretation on the artisitic design front..they way you've done the bra looks excellent.

you know iv'e been meaning to really concentrate on the mosaics for a while now so iv'e got a lot of info now to set me off in the right direction. its just understanding the fundamentals i suppose, once youv'e got that sorted your off. thanks for posting up the pics, your daughters have taught you well mate ;0)

i dont keep my joints straight around a radius ether ! ( but i never said i did ,if you read my repiy, i said,i like to keep the grout lines the same SIZE , as i don't like to see big /small grout lines, of course you have to stagger the rows as the length of each row is different. i never do pic's anymore on any forum ,as its to-much messing about, i will only ever do you-tube films, unless forums change so we can just press up-load

That one is fibreglass but the finish is nice and smooth I picked it up at a car boot £3.00but i have another one that I got out of a skip that was from a wedding shop that one is covered in sponge but underneath it is a fibreglass shell

Each job ed has to be taken at face value .. staggered rows as dean and dpf has done is the easiest and best method ... simple advice and easy to understand.

Ed I told you about the curved benches I did in Southport, single strips as Dean has done was the way I went, as said no right or wrong way. But voussoirs imo can be a pain with mosaics I prefare to fan using full tesserae. Each to their own.
