All I need is a flat surface to put the mosaic up against. The weight is negligible. It is only 2 mosaic pieces high. One mosaic square against the foam and one against the tray face, still on their netting/backing, and grouted.

Less of the smart comments please. What should I do instead, fill it with floor adhesive and try to keep it flat? At least with the foam I can pare it back perfectly flat.

Why dont you just use the 30mm upvc trim. It will be a lot easier and probably look just as good once you have messed around with the mosaics and tile trim.

to bridge the gap? wouldn't it still need some support behind it where the gap is?

If you have it so it overlaps the tray slightly you could you a glue called mitre bond which comes with a activator. It sets in a couple of seconds. Glue it either side then seal it up. The Upvc is really flexible and will bend around the tray with no problems.

Yes I am aware of 2 part glues etc. and I'm OK with that aspect of it.

Any tips on what to fill the space in with?

It really is only about 1.5cm high and the same deep.

So the gap between the floor and the underside of the shower tray is approx 2cm. What is the depth of the shower tray?

it's a slimline... probably about 10cm high

edit... gap is exactly 2cm, and tray is 5cm slimline

You can get the uPVC in different widths so you should be able to fix it with glue and then silicon without having to support it at the back
