wow so every tiler you know is so busy with work they can turn it away? or a drug addict...Im amazed that there is any discussions on this forum about price... we all should be charging £100 sqm given the lack of good tilers and the difficulty in getting one,

I guess construction companies must write to every tiler in the directory when they are looking for some1 then and interview them all ...even the guys that call themselves aaa advark tiling... or john smith tiling... but just maybe they dont and they never see that JOhn Smith tiler is actually very good whose itching to work .... dam I could pass him some work and feed his family ...but he could be a drunk drug addict ...better not risk it then

Ok let me clarify ... what I mean is commercial installations... Ive turned down jobs because I dont have the pace to make any decent money out of them and I dont really want to work on site ... I have had guys call me up looking for work... I could be a really nice guy and pass on the details of the commercial work to them ..or I could put my business head on and contract out to them and earn small for my business (its a business I am in the process of creating not just trying to make a quick buck out of others as a sole tiler, and like all of you at the end of the day got bills to pay and Im no charity).....

Do all of you lay victorian tiling and swimming pools ?

learn to walk before you run,start off with 1-2 operatives with you working with them if not your wage is dead money.start with small to medium jobs instead of terminal 6 and 1 pointer dont forget you have to finace the job and the the men expect to be paid at the end of the week not 30-60 days as you will be paid.i have had 12 fixers for 15 years so any questions i'll be glad to help

Psychowitch, keep thinking the way you do, I like it, I don't think you will get an exact answer to your question because there are so many factors to consider, should you stay small so that you can control everything? should you not look at the bigger commercial work in case you run into problems? should you just stick to what you know because thats what makes you feel cosy and warm? Now fast forward 20 years and all those projects have passed you by, all those possibilities are mere memories floating down a very dry river bed, if you think you can take on some of these works then do it, keep your eyes and ears open, take all advice on board and learn from it, cover all bases as much as you can, check out all prospective subbies, if you need advice then don't be afraid to pay for it, stay away from people who's glass is always half empty, you have to start somewhere, keep a tight rein on things and you will be fine.
Do not associate with losers, take all the advice you have been given on this forum and use it to your best interests, most of it is gold dust, some can be sour grapes.
15 years ago I had the ex wife, ex father in law, ex buddies (earning £8 per mtr) all saying that I should not take on commercial work, I choose to ignore them and I am still Fitness First's main tiling contractor, I worked on the trafford centre for 18 months with 6 good and solid men. Tiling in Germany was the best experience, Go for it matey, keep cool and you will be fine.
