Sorry to jump in on this but.....

No, most sparkies wont lay tile, however, they should install the mat, test for cont and note the readings,

Once the tile has been laid, he then returns, does another test to confirm readings then does all the final connections, fires it up and does the cert.

ANY electrical work in a bathroom is notifiable and Part P does not allow any sparkie to certify anyone elses work, UNLESS, he has paid at visit at various stages to make sure it all complies.

I've been taking plenty of readings. They all came out as expected. The mat will be RCD protected, so any risk should be theoretical anyway. I think it's important not to get too hung up on the exact letter of the law.

got me beat then if its so fool proof why they dont put a normal power plug on it so you have no need to get an electrician in at all:smilewinkgrin:

I figure it's about as low risk as you can get - a double insulated cable buried under 8mm of self leveller covered with water resistant primer, and then 4mm of tile adhesive and another 10mm of tile. Feed is from an RCD, there's nothing that can be touched directly. Even worst case let's say water managed to seep under the floor and saturate the cable and let's say the cable sheath was damaged - the RCD would shut the circuit down long before anyone could get a zap from it. It would also be an early warning that it was unsafe.

You've got infinitely more chance being killed making your morning toast. I'd be interested to hear the statistic on how many people get killed by UFH installed under bathroom tiles. I bet it's tiny.

In most countries they have standard wall switches inside the bathroom, and sockets for you to plug a hairdryer into!

Just bumping some threads in the underfloor heating forum. You can now find and search for both electric underfloor heating and water underfloor heating threads. By the way, if you feel some of the threads you want to be seen at the top of the forum need to be bumped back, for the next month or so from now, feel free to do that. Although it's not usually something we allow, whilst we're going through this process of changing over forum software, we see the need for this to happen.
