plasterboard vs 12mm WBP hardwood ply

ive got a big bathroom that ive split into two. 1 L-shaped bathroom and 1 square shower room. (not a wet room)
ive done my stud walls yeasterday and was going to ply line the inside of the shower room. (its just a full length shower encloser with a basin and towel rail. the shower enclosure is half the size of the room with a glass sliding door)
but in regards to the other side of the wall i was wondering if i can just plasterboard it and till ontop of that insted as its MUCH cheaper than 12mm WBP. i will be tilling to ceiling in both rooms.

any info would be a great help as it just cost me about £125 for only 4 sheets of 12mm WBP! its crazy money these days!
im just heading back out to the job and ill take a pic if it helps and will upload it when i get back in about 20 minutes.

Plasterboard in a shower room, why would you want to take the risk? Cant you use aqua panal? its only £10 - £12 per sheet and its waterproof, tape the joints and tank with a liquid tanking system, its quick, easy and effective.

hello mate. im not thinking of using plasterboard in the shower room. im going to ply line that as i said. its for the other side in the "bathroom"

heres a few pics.

p.s tiling over hardwall plaster is fine aswell right?

EDIT: the timber lying accross the floor in the shower room is to show how big and where the shower tray will be.

Why not use tile backer board as this is what it is made for if you use plaster board you would have to tank this to make it a good job

Hi buddy, yes you will be fine with moisture check plasterboard in the bathroom, I would still use aqua panal in the shower area though, far better than ply, I cant remember ever having seen ply in a shower room, you have it all studded out so it is set up and ready for aqua panal, that would be my preferred method.

ive done plenty of bathrooms with ply and never had a problem. as for the tile backer board....the only shop/supplier near me only does the marmox board (which i was told was rubbish) and in tiny sizes. good thing about the ply is that its not a massive room so 1 sheet would almost cover a whole wall.

its ONLY the side in the bathroom that i need help with. please ingnore the shower room.

as you can see from the pics, the bathroom side of the wall doesnt have any showers or baths next to it and the wall is out of the way from any water.....so....does that mean its ok to just use plasterboard on this side? and will plasterboard be strong enough for me to tile up to the ceiling? (not sure which tiles ill be using yet)

hi depends on your tile weight you did say floor to ceiling what size tile and thickness might help :8:

as for the shower room, i think people are getting confused with it being a wet room?
im not saying that aqua board wouldnt be better, because it would. my reason for the ply is because 1: ive never had a problem using marine ply, 2: i can buy if off the shelf and i need to crack on with the job, 3: it will cover 1 whole wall in almost 1 sheet, 4: i dont know where or who near me sells aqua board in big sheets? my local tiling place (boydens) only sell small sizes and one of their sheets wasnt even big enough to do all of my bath pannel in my flat!
if i could get big sizes of aqua without ordering it in i would.

Wickes stock aqua panal as do B & Q, 1200 x 1200 sheets, like I said earlier, they are about 12.00, plus a few quid for the screws and washers, even if you just use them on the walls that will be pounded with water it will be a safer way to go than marine ply.

oh ok thanks for that mate! i thought it may have been a bit too specialised for wicks and B&Q to stock :lol:
shame they dont do full length sizes though but i guess its not too bad. just fit one above the other.
ill pop down B&Q and see what they got!
thanks again for that mate. now i just need a beer to make up for the £125 i just wasted on WBP!! :mad2:

just been down B&Q and they only did the 1200x900 sizes. as its only a small room, im going to stick with the ply.
also you previously said tht you have never heard or seen ply in a bathroom before?? well can i ask you what you used before aqua (or any form of tilebacker) was invented? :lol:

I agree with WB on this....unless you have an incredibly stable plywood (multi ply cabinet grade baltic birch for example), I think ply is bad mojo.

PS Plywood quality here is really bad, bad, bad.
