I'm really sorry about this one, but I feel it's needed. Please don't take any of it personal.

Adhesive manufacturers pour millions into product development, and they design their products in systems. Much knowledge can ge gleaned by reading product specs and instructions. Always follow the recommendations of the manufacturer of your chosen products. If you don't, you're the one who's going to be stuck with the bill if the products don't perform according to specification.

I can think of few general rules regarding priming which apply to all brands and types of adhesives. Really, it depends on the brand, and type of adhesive. When I say "type of adhesive", I don't mean just tubbed or powdered.

Really, pick a brand of adhesives and grouts, like BAL, Ardex, or Mapei. They all produce good stuff. Then read their product guides, and follow the recommendations. All proper manufacturers provide guidelines on what product combinations to use when, where, and how, in most, or all, normally encountered tiling scenarios.

If you're using cement bases adhesive (and you should be for that sized tile) on plasterboard then you do need to prime it.
