First of all I apologise if this is in the wrong forum... but I don't know if this really fits in the tiling course section.

Really, I am wondering, having completed my tiling training, is it worth me paying out for a 1-week plastering and 1-week plumbing course?

The two courses would cost me £600 ish, and I would learn the bare basics of plumbing / plastering, but I assume not enough to call myself a plasterer or plumber out right.

I'm only really asking for opinions / advice because although I feel I can tile to a high standard I am a little worried about the other aspects of being self-employed and tiling.... such as having full responsibility for removing radiators, toilets.... re-rendering after removing old tiles etc.

Am I likely to learn enough in one week to re-plaster after removing old tiles and to shift a radiator out of the way to tile etc?

If so, can you guys recommend any courses at all?

yeah, but is one week enough to actually be able to do it? I am well aware there are lots of cowboy courses out there....

Plus, plumbing and plastering seem to be truely 'time served' type of trades... Am I just going to waste £600? lol

I noticed a plumbing course with City & Guilds 6129 award is 4k via the contruction college!

I would do the Plastering course as I found that on my second job I could have made a bit more money if I could plaster. Like dave said, taking off toilets and sinks and the odd radiator is pretty easy. Just have a go at it in your own home.

You can do the 6129 plumbing course for free apparently, people on here have done it for free. Concept PHT being one but he is no longer a member but may be worth reading his old posts.

the plumbing course will show you how to fit a bathroom suite in an open bay where you have room to move (thats nothing like real life)and thats about it as for the plastering that is worth it if you have a room to do after for your self so you can see how good you are. we did a bathroom that needed tiles removing from all 4 walls and she only wanted 1 1/2 tiling so we charged £420 to plaster the rest (not bad for a days pay)

Yeah, I just want the plastering to compliment my tiling.

AS for the plumbing, well to start off with I want it to go with my tiling... but since doing my tiling I have gained in confidence and I now feel I could actually do plumbing (something which has always interested me), so I would like to do the 6129 :)

Local colleges all offer the 6129.... problem being there is a 2 year waiting list AND the course itself takes 2 years of like 2 evenings per week... I've been unemployed for a long, long time and I don't have to to waste so, as long as the qualification is worth it I am trying to get some funds to do the course via the construction college!

i did both courses as well as tiling mine were only two days on each and although as you say i could not call my self a plumber or plasterer i learnt enough to do what you want to do so a week should be plenty. i have also researched the 6129 city and guilds and it does seem expensive however i found an organisation called OLCI that allow you to carry out the study packs at home and attend regional centres to carry out your training in modules so depending on where you are situated this may be of some help. you can pay the courses on a monthly basis so it is not a one of hit and can be done in slow time. you also do not have to complete the whole 6129, you can sit city and guilds 6022-02and 6032 which i am told allows you to basic plumbing maintenace and install and bathroom suites. i am not selling this as i have not made up my mind yet if it a good or bad course or worth the money but i can give you the web address if you want it.

As a tiler, doing a 6129 to remove a bathroom suite is not necessary - it is time wasted. An intense 1 week practical course on bathroom fitting and associated knowledge is all you need.

This is something we get asked all the time, and this is why we are now going to run these courses in the very near future at our centre to accomodate this.

Best regards.

city & guilds 6129 is only pipework (i think) better doing 6032 which is sanitary
design and installation just do the training only 3 days (OLCI £300) why pay £300
for a certificate if you only need to know about bathroom installs , you do not need a
qualification to do plumbing work in the uk until 2010 (i think)
