Please help getting conflicting advice!!!

Plasterboard the area first

Get it straight and plumb (take your time)

Apply a tanking sytem. This comprises a liquid paste and a mesh. Paint it onto the plasterboard

Do not put any PVA bond on the plasterboard.


This wet room / shower was built with a mix of plasterboard and then marine ply. The whole lot was Bal Bonded to prevent water ingress.

Once sealed then the tiles placed on top adhesive direct onto the plasterboard.

Even the home made shower tray (made with 18mm marine ply) was Bal-Bonded using the paste and the mesh.

When you say 'Bal-Bonded' is that a normal term to use for tanking?
If this is what you mean in this photo example, I can't see any tanking, is it only tanked half way up and covered by the tiles?
On the other hand, I might be missing the whole point with this 'Bal-Bond' phrase.....

Sorry I've muddied things a bit. In the shot above there is no tanking system. I just wanted you to see we put tiles onto plasterboard with no PVA.

But yes we did continue to tank the cubicle (after that shot) with Bal Tanking

The bucket above contains the gloop. You just brush it on. But you also get little square mats that you put over joints.

PVA Brickwork and allow to dry before d&d plasterboard...u'll get a better bond as dust etc will be sealed. 50:50 PVA to water will be fine.
