Went to price up a kitchen floor yesterday in a very nice part of town. Spec was as follows.
  • 22sq m Floor in irregular shaped room
  • 500 x 500 Porcaline, vitrified tiles, cream
  • 3 Substrate types due to previous extensions - 10 sq m Chipboard, 5m existing tiles onto floorboards, 7m (ish) concrete screed.
  • Floor levels are understandably all over the place, if leveled off the high point there would be a 25mm step from the lounge.
  • All of the house has been renovated, the £15,000 kitchen is in, wooden flooring throughout and the decorators are just fininshing up (me thinks this is all a bit backwards)
I quoted for the following (I didn't give the customer this info just the price)
  1. Removal of existing tiles, level floor using suitable boarding and Ditra matting. = £320
  2. Supply suitable SPF (white) 20kg x 10 = £200
  3. Supply suitable flexi grout 15kg = £50
  4. Supply 2 litres lithofin FZ Impregnator = £60
  5. Two & 1/2 days to tile, seal, grout, re-seal and clean = £390
  6. Petrol & Consumables = £50
Total - £1070

He claims he has got a quote for £640 including all materials, Am I missing somthing here? Not going to lose any sleep over it as it looked like a ***** of a job anyway.

Any feedback always welcome

I'd be wary if someone quoted me £640 for all that work/mats. Just tell him to give you a ring when he wants you to come and put it all right.

I'm guessing the other guys is just gonna try to tile straight onto the current substrates.

No your not..did a similar job a while back..27m2 hallway, kitchen and utility..plywood in hallway, varying levels of screed elsewhere, in brick style ceramic 600x400, cuts everywhere, spent ages grinding down the different screed levels to blend in with each other..£1000 labour only..earnt every penny and the customer was/is delighted...

I think you might also need to include a movement joint between the 2 substrates...

Forgive my ingorance but wouldn't the ditra matting negate the need for a movement joint between the different substrates?

i looked at a job recently, 24m2 of 600x600 slate onto a wooden substrate, she gave the job to some joker who quoted £560 labour and mats ......:speechless:

You guys on the mainland are seriously lucky. Im now pricing against 12.50 a sq m and on another job the tile supplier could put in his guys at 14 a sq yard and stand over their work. Granted these where big jobs, both a few 100m2, i didnt even try and match them. Guys here are killing themselves for work. The credit crunch is hitting tiling hard, still its a good time to get work any work done to yer own pad! (if those boys are any good at 12.50, i will let them do my work and i'll sit on my *** at home:lol:!)

Just picked up another big floor at 30 a m2 though, lovely.
