Ray I have a job next week with 1200x1200x10 porc on a large floor, would you say that I'd also be better with say a 12mm notch to the floor and a flat 1mm bed to the tile rather than notching the back of the tile as well?
depends on how flat the floor is and how flat the back of the tile is .also a 12mm square notch wont help will make it harder to break the ribs get your self a piece of 600x300 glass and see what happens using diffrent trowels and adhesive see what works for you

I'd be getting a straightedge all over that floor Lee & using that size porcelain I would definately be spreading the floor with a 12mm trowel and spreading back of the tile with a 12mm of any high spots then working off that with an edge........depending on how the floor is of course......

If the floor was perfect i,d still go 10mm minimum on substrate and tile just to give yourself some play.......

Just ordered 2 tiger trowels for 1200x2400 porc. gonna back skim tile and trowel floor. prepped the floor myself and is bob on now after a s*** concrete job.
tried that trowel out you wont get full covaridge about 80% but you will use 30% more adhesive 10mm ragni all day long will beat it hands down

Took your and Marc's advice this morning Ray and ordered two of them, I'm certainly not gonna ignore any advise from you guys. I was just surprised to find that a flat skim to the tile would be more effective than a notched one and thats what i was querying, but you've done the test and thats good enough for me.
Thanks again for the advice
