been to start a job today, agreed a "cash" price on day rate, materials supplied by the customer, told by main contractor that she is out of the country for a few days and can i front the materials... no problem, off i go!
paid out for materials £700 worth in advance,
produced an invoice to customer (whom was back for a couple of hours before her next flight) and she said "oh i will write the cheque in a minute, i am just getting ready!"

customer *&^% off, no cheque for me and i am out of pocket!
then i find out she has been writing cheques and leaving them behind for the labour!

thats not what we agreed i said to the contractor im 20% out of pocket PLUS the material outlay!

he said she is good for it!
and so would i be, her labour rate has dropped 20% her cash out lay for materials is £0.00 and she is back in a month owing me thousands and will give me a cheque that may or may not clear (7 days after she gives it to me,if i get it to the bank the same day!!!!!) the bank will charge me to check if she is good for it, the credit card company will want thier interest and all i have out of the deal is the £$%£$% hump & no wages for a MONTH!!!!!!!

sometimes when sub-contracting the work you can wait up to 6 weeks to see the money,it all depends on when you strike up the deal,to be honest if you are taking the work from the contractor then it's up to him to pay you,sounds like you might be playing piggy in the middle

I always the tell the customer that the mateials are to be paid for in cash as soon as they get on the job.

My pleasure. As it is you haven't actually been paid so it isn't an issue. Just be slighlty more careful though what you post in the public forums. The laws changed about 2 years a go where accountants, solicitors and business advisers are now obliged under law to disclose to HMRC any suspicion of fraud. Not doing so can lead said person to be breaking the law and get 5 years or more in prison. As I am a "said person" I don't wish to go to prison for keeping members "cash dealings" to myself.

i declare all of my cash earnings, i have a morgage and a credit score i would like to keep. i also do not wish to be asked difficult questions by the taxman, so no fraud, however i thought that the tax "discount" i applied to this customer 5 months ago when i had no work still stood!!!
i am more peeved at not getting any money for a month!!!!!

lesson learned..i hate working for contractors/builders..you need to be as fly as them im afraid and wake up and smell the coffee.I am sure you wont get caught out again.
