Hi guys what are you guys charging for drilling porcelain tiles . been asked to put up soap dish in shower ,two shelves, toilet roll holder robe hook . about ten holes altogether all 6mm  thanks in advance

is this an add on to a bathroom you have tiled or a single job to drill holes for a customer only? if it was me and i had just done there bathroom i might drill them free of charge ,these things stick in the customers mind:thumbsup: if its a job only to go and dril holes id charge 50 pounds

We charge £200 a day + VAT (Congestion charge @ £10 a day + VAT London) and then £3 a hole. We get about 2 jobs a month from the London area but more holes usually about 30 holes per job.

its a bathroom i've just tiled about a month ago now the customer has these nick nacks to put up ,,,, drills aren't cheap so I won't be doing it free gatis thats for sure :yikes:

1/2 day rate
charge them for your time only
drill bit if used properly lasts 30 times at only £14 then that works out at £3.20
well thats the plasplug bits i use from tile giant:thumbsup:

For the London jobs its a lot of commercial work (Banks, Hotels, Shop Fitting) for example we spend three days on site at a London Bank to drill holes in corridor tiles so that ADT could lock down their glass doors with a quick release magnetic bolt in case of fire.

A lot of fiddly work but it was £600 for that job and the actual number of holes drilled was 5 pairs.

We do some domestic work (maybe about 14 houses a year) but they often want to negotiate cash prices and dont like paying the £200.

I'd price it per hour, + expenses + cost 6mm drill from 365 drills - 'cause they are the best you can buy.

i have to admit richard that the 15mm and upwards bits are good but my 6 and 8 mm didnt even go through one hole i kept them wet and didnt apply too much pressure am i doing something wrong al the diamons just rubbed off

If I was quoting for the job I charge £3 per hole (rads/shower/water pipes etc). Putting up towel rails, cabinets, shower risers, bathroom shelves, shower curtains etc can take a bit of time. Normally the customer will give you the box containing the item. You have to unpack it, read the instructions and make sure you don’t drop any of those tiny screws down the plughole! You also have to make sure all shelves are level. A few months ago I accepted £50 from a builder to put up 3 items. Easy money I thought. It turned out to be 5 items each requiring four 6mm holes drilled into porcelain (20 holes in total). Apart from burning out 2 of my diamond drill bits I had to go out and buy another one. It took me half a day! You will have to explain to the customer that porcelain requires special tools to cut it. You will have to charge them too. £50 seems a fair labour price plus £10 for the drill bit. Cheers Sean

I bet you would Kilty! only if you wear the kilt with yer safety boots :drool5: Opps sorry, since the ban of shorts on site Ive missed my daily lustful few minutes in the summer. Trouble is Kilty the train fare would cost nearly that much I thinks...

By coincidence We've just picked up a job this morning at Postcode W9 1LN The bloke wants 12 holes drilling in his new bathroom. Quoted him the usual £200 for a domestic job rather than the £200+ for commercial. His situation is that he already bought our drills but too scared to use them. Would we come and do it? I'll take the camera.... Will post back later with some pics.

First will have to drop my daughter into day care (Goodbye £50 in care fees from 8am to 6pm) then petrol into the limo and off to Central London.

OK so this is how a £200 job stacks up...

1) Load up the car with the tools.

2) Arrive at the scene and say hello to the road sweeper! - Make sure he doesnt sweep my car away....

3) Pay for 3 hours parking at £1.80 on the telephone.

7) Photograph all the customers markings for his holes. In case of dispute.

8) Start drilling those very EXPENSIVE tiles being very careful and taking time.

9) Measure Measure Measure! Here we see the guide plate about to be used.

10) Cores are coming out like bullets out of a machine gun!

Going really well. Customer is very pleased.

11) Finally Perfect 6mm holes in C5 Grade very expensive FITTED tiles....
Any errors... And its ££££ time!

So now here is the breakdown of the money:
Started off agreeing a flat £200 fee.
Customer had already bought 2 x packs of cores from us @ £29.99 x 2.
Asks if he can give a pack back so we discount £29.99 from the £200.
Thats £170.
Then we have used his drills from the first pack so we allow £20 for that.
Final bill is now £150 which he pays to us on a credit card.
Thats now become inclusive of VAT. So thats £127.65 + VAT @ 17.5%
It cost us £5 in petrol to get there and back in the smart for 2 hours travel.
It cost £5.40 in parking.
It cost us £2.12 in credit card handling fees.
Total take home pay was £115.13
After I paid for daycare that left me with £65.13 to go out to the pub.

How did a £200 London job get to £60 quid! - No wonder he drives the 2 seater Porche and I drive the 2 seater Smart...
