after some of the problems with travertine floor tiles i've heard recently on here, from indepdent tile stores, and other fixers, i'd advise the customer to think again about choosing travertine!

I would say that statement is totally unfounded, you cant make a statement like that purely on what you hear and read on here. You must realise that thousands of metres of trav are layed every week and as a source of help and advice the forum gets propotionaly more problem posts and I think I answer maybe one a week.

You cant tar one product with the same brush its like saying dont buy a car when they come from different factories, Trav doesnt come from 1 hole in the ground and all at the same quality.

Now if it was from personal experience then you could well be in a position to grumble at the very most.

many thanks for all your advice and thoughts guys. as there are only 5 tiles out of possibly 100 i am goig to lift these and re lay new ones. i agree that thse should have been back buttered which would of helped with any soft spots. in hindsight i think i would have advised the owners of the salon to steer clear from travertine and maybe opt for porcelain. anyway have learned quite a lot off your answers to my problem and would like to thank you all.cheers thompa

Horses for courses m8 and good you have gained something from this

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a good quality Travertine that has been back buttered, laid and fixed correctly with no lippage, grouted and sealed correctly:thumbsup:

I think this is an important issue. As yet I have not laid any travertine, only marble and granite. How would I "know" good quality travertine when I see it? Advice gratefully received as always guys.

i wonder who the bright spark was that thought one day
there must be something we can do with all this substandard limestone /marble all full of fault lines, holes and the like
i know he said we,ll cut it into tiles fill the holes with grout and flog it to the dick heads in england
very clever
but at the end of the day its all crap
just remember the quarry's use to crush it up for hardcore only a few years back

If there is good stuff , how can we tell? but most of it very likely to end up with holes in it or cracking

I’ve had a problem recently with travertine I told the chap when I firs seen the tiles that they were rubbish they were full of filler and some had no weight to them at all. But he insisted that they were sold to him as top quality. He is not complaining at all about the installation but the trav is disintegrating as he is walking on it there is only him and his wife so very little traffic on it. He had the rep around to have a look the first thing he said was that is not our stone. The only thing we can think is some one at the tile shop is on a little earner. The rep was not happy and is looking in to it
