Hi all,

had as a quote for Tiler to lay 18.5 squared meters of 60cm by 30cm porcelain. Quote is £**** Includes grout, adhesive and boarding out in hardibacker.

This seems expensive but the guy comes recommended, I appreciate that porcelain is more expensive to fit because of the adhesive and the cutting. Plus the guys work examples look great.

It works out at £** a square meter. Ouch. Is that a rip off or for a professional is that what I should expect to pay. It's down south if that figures.

Sorry no pricing in the open forum but can be discussed via a PM.

If your not happy with the quote could you not get prices from other tilers.

I am guessing you have seen the prices Mark.. What was your thoughts?

There are other things to consider. You might live on the 32nd floor of a block in the middle of London, or maybe your recommended tiler lives 100 miles away from where you live.

Your 18.5sqm could be in a square room with only one door or in a kitchen with an island, floor sockets and 5 doors leading off into other rooms, and corners and a step.

I'm afraid lots of people work out the sqm price and think it is the same price for all situations.

Don't forget that the tiler has to buy the adhesives, grout, primer, sealer, Silicon, hardiebacker boards, screws before he gets to you. Then he has to have cutting machines and tools to be able to perform the job.

Oh, and he has taken time to visit you, measure up, construct a quote and mail it to you.

Obviously I don't know what price you were quoted, but you should always get at least 3 quotes.

You could always pop down to Topps tiles and find out how much 20 Hardiebacker boards, plus screws, adhesive, grout etc would cost you. Then you would have an idea of labour charges.

You can't really use the words 'rip off' based on one quote i'm afraid.

Building work is expensive these days, and the price of materials are going up on a monthly basis, i'm even shocked at the prices of some specialised adhesives.

Good luck with your project.
