I have been approached about a very interesting job in birr, central ireland.
Having submitted my quote which i suspect will be high , I am not sure if i could even carry out the work at time required, even if accepted .
nevertheless i would like to recommend someone in ireland if i can to help the client.
i am actually recommended by two of the suppliers of the reclaimed stone that client has bought who are based in france and uk.
does anyone know a fixer or fixing company in ireland that specialises in reclaimed stone flooring.
there is a whole mixture of reclaimed floors.
ten old reclaimed floors whose areas vary between 9.00 sq mts and 33.00 sq. mts.
theres a reclaimed black and white edwardian 50 x 50 set on diagonal with border .
french octagonal with slate inset.
black and white marble .
three dimensional small format limestone floor.
antique french slate floor

just a follow up.
i suspect that my price will be very high when i take in to consideration that i charge 40% more when working away from home .
this is to cover the 40% extra that i pay my employees and myself when we do any work away.
there is also the add on of travel expenses that which i charge in addition .
i charge ferry/taxis/flights/ petrol/foreign work travel insurance if applicable and if driving by van at cost .but charge £ 30.00 per hour for real travel time for my employees to get to site in addition to any of travel costs
of course if i had not enough work for my employees and myself then the pricing would be different.
there must be a quality fixer within an hour and a half of birr who is also experienced in dealing with reclaiimed stone floors of all sizes and thicknesses.
the job is a cracker
I would love to do it but suspect that it will not only be the price coming from england but the date that i think will be within next 2 months that will be a problem.

None of the boys here in the North would be close to it and don't know of any stone specialist companies as such, but would say Joe Hillhead @hillhead would be fit for the job.

Jonny, are you sure you can't do the work? Its a great place to work, (ok I am biased, but theres nothing like going home). I would jump at the opportunity to get back out there again, but I think the timing wouldnt work out right for us. I know you said you topped up 40% on your normal estimate, but trust me the last time we were out there it was so expensive, we ended up loading the next van with food for the lads. Make sure you have costed enough into your quote.

thanks . i dont know joe personally or if he does a lot of reclaimed stone but i may give him a call if i am out of the equation.
it would be real shame not to do it but i would understand if the client could get someone for a lot less not just because my fixing costs may be higher but the added cost of travel/accomodation/subsistence that he would not have to pay to a more local stone specialist if they could travel to site from home every day.
I havent heard back from client so he may have some quotes in already from local tradespersons.
lynn I would love to do this job as it is the sort of work we love and think we are good at.
I have counted that we have done 14 jobs in ireland over the years and my employees and myself always like to go there.
it was always like a holiday as it was so relaxed on site for me and we always get a good reception from other trades on site.
plus the craic in pub with great guinness was always on the cards.
have worked all over from south west to environs of cork, wicklow mountains and west of there in horse country.
unfortunately i have not had a job there for at least 7 years which may be a sign of the fact that many stone fixers who were in uk moved back home during the good times.
the jobs i got were always through recommendation from stoneage and paris ceramics and at the time from 17 years ago till say 7 years ago, there were no stone shops in ireland .
most of of the jobs were in big old piles that the americans were buying up and they did alot of their shopping in london.
its all changed now and i guess i am realising when i write this that yes i probably wont get the job.

You know what we should do...all pile in the van for four days, and bang the job out!

Like a working holiday...off course I would be the project manager!!! (just kidding) but I make good tea and sandwiches, and am good at ironing.
