Hi there

Customer has existing tiling in hallway, although a cat has discoloured the grout. She would like black grout. How do I go about regrouting and then sealing the grout so this dosent happen again. Many thanks

Hi Howard,

You need to take out the old grout with a grout rake or a Fein mutimaster, clean everything up and then regrout with your chosen grout. Black might give you nightmares for cleaning though!!!!!! Be aware it is a really sh***y job though and you will more than likely damage tiles with the grout removal tools.

There are sealants you can buy for the grout. Have a look in Topps at Fila stuff I think or Seal-Guard - they have a spnsored link on this site, look at the bottom of the page.

Thanks grumpy this website is ace! I know there only basic questions but Im making sure I do everything right. I envisaged taking the grout out. I have a fein multimaster so I might give it a go. It may well be as cheap to relay tile on tile. Im always going to recommend sealing grout to stop discolouration. Again many thanks to everyone for their help.

If the grout is just discoloured, but other than that in good condition, you could use a grout recolourant. No chance of chipping the tiles as you don't have to remove the old grout.

What I'll do is clean first then use the grout colourant. I think this is best solution for customer.

If the discolouring results from the cat´s urine, it can smell terrible for a long time as the urine is deep in the grouts. I would be afraid that this will remain if the grouts are only recoloured, therefore I have the same opinion as grumpygrouter - regrout.
