I started a new job today where I had to remove the old tiles. It took me ages to get all the old adhesive off as they had been on for so long. I ended up digging into the plaster work underneath the adhesive to get it off. My question is do I have to remove all the old adhesive or just the stuff that is loose? The stuff on the walls today was just like another layer of plaster. I took it all off this time but was wondering if I could save myself time in the future.

just try to take the thick off and tile using a slightly larger notched trowel....dave...

So as long as it is firmly attached to the wall then its ok to tile onto. There are no problems with the level of the wall because its no where near flat anyway

I just started removing the tiles from my wall and was about to ask the same question so cheers felix  and thanks to those who replied

If I used hot soapy water and a hand scraper, how long would it take for the wall to dry? roughly... cheers...

You might find your plasterboard won't particularly like hot soapy water on it, thats the reason tanking and tiles are there, to try to keep the plasterboard dry.

Grumpy
