lo all,if for example i did a 3 week bathroom fitters course for plumbing, would i be able to get insurance to cover myself in domestic installations from a basic course?

ive been considering doing a plumbing course and a longer plastering one for ages now but wanted to make sure if i do a short plumbing one someone will give me liability cover incase of accidents etc:smilewinkgrin:

Water plumbing, yes, gas plumbing, no (obviously).

Like tiling, there isn't a 'law' as such for plastering or plumbing as there is with electrical and gas plumbing (and pretty much no other common trades to be fair).

You can currently even without training get PL insurance for "bathroom fitting" which covers you for plumbing and other things. Whereas tiling costs a similar figure and doesn't cover you if tiles fall off and cause your prep work to fall off too.

You're making me think I'm wrong but I'm sure I'm not lol I run the world's biggest plumbing forum (does that come with credit if I don't post on it much?! haha).

I'd ask the plumbers to be sure mate, Plumbing Forum | Plumbing Advice | Plumbers Forums | A forum for plumbers advice in the UK.

Though Chase (Tiling Courses and Tiling training From Chase Tiling Academy and Construction Assessment Group) WILL be able to answer and show you facts.

But i'm sure I've had my view from reading a tiler on here some years ago that was advised by his PL insurance firm to go down as a bathroom fitter/kitchen fitter if he's fiddling with the strengthening of joists and the removal/re-installation of rads. And even relocating the loo etc.

Talk to Direct Line

I have their PL policy for general tradesman. I can't remember what it is called but it suits my needs very well. They don't need qualifications. I'm paying about £150 per annum for the PL element.

When I initially contacted them I had got a quote on line for about twice that. I phoned them for clarification on a small point and fortunately spoke to a lady quite high up, who immediately pointed out that whilst this would afford me adequate cover there was a much cheaper way to satisfy my needs, so she signed me up to what I've got now.

For a bit extra you can add tool cover.

I had been insured via my local broker, but they were getting far less interested in providing a service.

Other companies like More Than Business wanted to charge per trade, and needed me to ensure that people working in each trade had the correct qualifications etc

If anyone wants me to I'll find out what the policy is actually called. There are policies out there that cover the 'handyman' Limitations usually include a max of 10m working height, mandatory use of ticketed scaffolding above certain heights, some hot working restrictions, etc ,etc.

There is nothing in the policy that would have affected me anyway. I do general bathroom installations, general building jobs, UPVC fascia and soffit work and other such jobs etc.

As I say, don't be fooled into going down the route of specialist trade PL insurance for sole traders/partnerships etc. It's often not the cheapest, especially if you need to diversify.
