The tuffdec2 trays need sanding to key them ready for sticking the tanking membrane down with flexible adhesive...as these trays are screwed down and need to be tanked.

If you have grout cracking then ye.. it sonds like some deflection and maybe the tray is not supported properly.. these trays can span 450 centred on joists etc no problem if the joists are all flat and level.. but now and again they will flex if not screwed down properly

Hi guys,

Got a few days off work so thought id make a start on my little project.

I have a couple of queries though...

- The tile came off far too easily. Once id removed most of the grout the tile littlerally could be lifted away from the tray with all the adheasive stuck to th tile. Im guessing the grout was the only thing holding the tiles down/together?

- once lifted away, i noticed the tray was damp. (i wouldnt say wet, just mosit) Again im guessing that moisture seeped into the cracks in the grout?

- There doesnt appear to be a membrane of any kind, not even tape around the corners / edges!!!

- The tray flexes only very slightly - not really noticeable - its appears very rigid.

- The tiler appeares to have used ALOT of adheasive, so the surface of the floor tiles are 14mm from the tray. The tiles are 8mm thick.

----------------------------------------

Right, those are all the problems / points ive noticed so far. The tray itself seems in good nick so I dont think it needs replacing.

My question now is how best to proceed? My plan is to:

1. Waterproof it as best I can using Mapei tape around the edges and the coating the whole thing in mapegum.

2. Tile a mosaic directly over that with keraquick and then grout using ultracolor plus.

Does that sound about right? Any other advice / tips please dont hesitate.

Cheers.

Hi,

Just thought I'd show you the nearly finished article. Im pretty pleased with it as a first attempt, it drains the water ok pretty well and seems water tight. Its finally tanked aswell! Cant believe it wasnt done before.

Strangely the most difficult thing I found was sealing the corners with the silicone, ive still got to get the knack of that!

Just one final question - Id like to seal the grout. The research ive conducted seems to suggest HG or Lithofin sealers are best for ultracolor plus...but it doesnt seem to be suitable for glass mosaics (mine are anti-slip).

Any suggestions?

Cheers
