shower room

Hello all,

Just a quick question...I'm tiling a shower room next week which at the moment just consists of bare plastered walls and an unfitted shower tray in one corner.

My question is this. Is it ok to tile right to the floor behind the shower tray or should I be tiling to the top?

install the tray first if it has a built in upstand then that should sit into the skimcoat so your tiles sit flush onto the tray

I tile onto shower tray, less chance of leakage imo

depends on the type of tray you have Brendan, some come with adjustable legs others you have to create a stand for but yes once the wastes are in place fitting the tray is not difficult!

Just out of interest. If the shower tray wasn't there, ie hadn't been bought yet. Would you advise getting it before tiling or tile to the floor?

get it fit it then tile! its the right way to do it if you tile to the floor then fit the tray you WILL have issues later :mad2:

you need to fit tray first then tile down 2mm gap for silicone gives a neat finish!

If you tile down to the floor 1st, you're probably gonna be left with a pretty large gap between top of tray and tiles. That's asking a lot of the silicone, and you're gonna get leaks.

Ok, so definately fit it first. Marc you mention that I may have to create a stand for it? would this be just a few lengths of wood screwed to the floor? what kind of clearance do I need beneath the plug hole?

depends on the positioning of the waste and the style of trap your going to use! its not the sort of thing you can advise without seeing the room to many variables like does the waste run under the floor or above the floor?

Thank's for all the advise. I'm not due to start the job for a week so I think I'll take the easy route and send them a text/email explaining that the tray wiil need to be fitted before I can start.

Either way if you go for tray in first or not I would build the cubicle up and position in place to see if the clearances are ok. had a shower to do not so long ago. Followed manufacturers guidelines and when come to fit cubicle it overhung the tray at the front. At that stage its too late for excuses. So I would say wether you tile first or tray first then tile, make sure the cubicle fits.
