shower walls

Hi
I have removed the old tiles from my shower walls and of course it has left them slightly uneven. What is the best material to use prior to retiling, or can i just use a thicker bed of adheasive. if so what is the best type to use.I looked at Bal render but there is still some old tile adheasive and plaster left on the sand a cement render. I don't want to do any more hammer and bolster work as the wall is only 75mm Thermalite and has finished decorations on the other side.
Any help to overcome this problem will be gratefully received.
