im crap at siliconing but ive always used masking tape to do it, if you get taught the wrong way its hard to find the right way.

Buy yourself a Karl Dahm kit and just practise. I generally get good results form it but to be honest, it is essential to have good even gaps to get the best results, along with having clean edges - no grout or adhesive to try and silicne over!
