""Ok, there's an ad saying experienced tilers required for immediated start on various commercial and domestic central london sites. nust have CSCS and CIS (self employed right??) upto £14 ph""

Hi Brendan,

from your comment it sounds to me like a construction agency?? I did lots of these last year for a couple of different agencies on differenct sites. If its is then the wage payments and tax are deducted by the agency/payroll company and you receive a payslip - just like being employed for any normal job, but your not employed, your still s/employed.

Phone hmrc and get your CIS/UTR asap, mine took about 6weeks and i had to pay a lot more tax.

To be honest mate if you can get on with an agency you might be alright you generaly are not on one job for long and you are on an hourly rate but working for a subby on price is a different kettle of fish their are plenty of blokes out their with far more experience than you and will leave you standing plus prices on site at the moment, if you can find one are very low it wont matter how many hours you put in it wont be worth it unless you have the speed, when times are good going on site is a good way to learn you will get the sack a few times but if you have it in you youl soon learn and gain experience unfortunately at the moment is not a good time.

I haven't done any agency site work for many years and none of it was tiling - But I found that the standard of work from the agency workers was quite shocking it seems they all lied about experience and hardly any of them got booted of site. So don't worry about it but I should warn you that the agency will ask for a report from the site foreman. If the report is good, you'll get lots more work from the agency, if not, they will delete your number - this is where they weed out the incompetent. That said the foreman doesn't always fill out a report because they are too busy, so some 'tradesmen' get away with it.

Secondly I always pushed up the hourly rate, if they pay you £15 an hour you can be sure they are charging the site £25. But again this was many years ago so because times are hard for site workers right now you might not be able to squeeze them for an extra couple of quid an hour.

All the agencies I worked for paid weekly, 1 week in arrears.

One I worked for up your way was 'Options Construction' I don't know if they are still in business (15 years ago) but they seemed to be pretty fair

Good luck:thumbsup:
