The revial of the BTD scam reminded me of a couple of phone calls we've had this week.
The insurance on my sky box ran out this week but the direct debit just rolls over, nothing else to do or sign. Wife received a phone call saying another payment was required and could they have our bank details, after refusing she phoned sky and they confirmed it was a scam. Just had another call yesterday, same story! Somebody has access to the sky paperwork!
Somebody somewhere is going to fall for it unfortunately

seriously though, is it difficult to work out who in your street has Sky? Looking for a distinctive sky dish somewhere up high on the house, and the strategically placed Sky remote on the chair arm nearest the window probably helps some eagle eyed scammer.

I confuse everybody, I never took down the Sky dish that was left by the previous occupiers

you don't need to though, if it's a scam. just think of how many people take insurance on an electrical item, forget they've taken it and then get a reminder that it's about to run out. it only takes one person to fall for it and give a scammer their bank details, and then the bank account is emptied.

and it's the chancers that get away with it. doesn't matter what industry they're in.

Are you saying SKY know some people are doing this? If so why have they not contacted their customers warning them, seeing as it must be from info that they have leaked!:incazzato: Maybe they are breaching the data protection act and in warning customers they are admiting it.
They must do

Someone phoned me the other weel from sky to see if I wanted insurance for the dish and box incase it broke, I told them that if it brole they could replace it free of charge or cancel my subscription, I cant believe that they sell insurance for their equipment, virgin never did, if it broke they sent a new one end of.

This scam was on radio 1 news yesterday but with BT phone customers. Asking for a payment saying they need a payment up front to renew their deal or something. All it is is a trick to get your bank details, which from then on god knows what they do. Don't know if they charge you or use the details in a dodgy way to steal your ID as such to do something but either way, it's not on.

Even when my bank phones me and starts to go through the process of asking for security details I say wait, shouldn't you know it's me if you've called me? I'll call you back give me your details!

Luckily (or not so) every time I call them back they are genuine. But I know friends of friends that scam this way so I've never answered a call and given even my name unless it's somebody I know is calling. And that's the way it'll stay.
