That's malachite. It's quite beautiful and translucent also. So many pieces were made with that stone in a way that it could be back lit or allowed natural light to flood through it.

My father used to repair similar items along with a lot of nephrite. He was a goldsmith specialising in engraving and enameling, he would often have faberge item in to repair for Wartski, Garrards and Asprey. Faberge was very fond of nephrite and malachite and incorporated in some of the famous easter eggs presented to the Royals of the time.

It's a dying trade, not because people are no longer able to do it, there simply aren't the customers prepared to pay for it.

The MD of Wartski's is Geoffrey Munn, the quietly spoken chap from Antiques Roadshow that always deals with the Faberge. Dad co authored a few books about Faberge with Geoffrey over the years.

Thats interesting ATS ,i see a program about Faberge last week it was fascinating , did your father get involved with ornate clock faces ,a friends father used to do a lot of these and he was a goldsmith ,i also did a pool for a guy and his wife specialised in making Faberge egg replications when i finished there pool she presented me with one...............

Yes he did, he did also once bring home one of the real imperial eggs he had in for repair at the time.

It was a bit lost on me at the time as I was young but over the years I now appreciate how skilled he was.
