Was starting a bathroom to day got all loaded yesterday afternoon phoned the customer last night and he text me to say he has got some one already doing the job could not wait,just hate time wasters he did not have the decency to let me know a few days ago.

I'd start turning off texts for numbers you don't know. Sick of hearing people be cancelled by text.

Or start replying with "Error: Sorry this message has not been delivered at this time, please try again later, or call."

Deposits should be taken and knocked off the final bill! Anybody who is serious would not mind that at all.

id agree with deposites dan but it would mean all tradesmen doing so for anyone to be able to do it... unless the work is piled than its just like overpricing lol

I had to bin a 50m2 floor this week cause the customer wouldn't pay me a deposit, wanted me to fork out over £1,500 for tiles aswell......sick to death of bloody time wasters !!

I only take deposits if I'm buying the tiles, it has backfired a couple of times but, mostly it's ok.

doesn't everybody get the money for materials before starting a job? I wouldn't start a job without the customer purchasing all that is needed for the job... only money you should wait for is the final payment for completion of work which is fair enough man

I have never taken a deposit in my life.
I will never supply any tiles, as alot are stone and never come looking the same as the sample, so i never get stuck with them when they say " i don't like them", or the porcelain tiles are different batches.
I don't think there is enough profit in supplying tiles with all the possible hassles involved.
Many be missing a trick, but like to concentrate on the fixing.
Will not do a job unless i supply the adhesive and grout.

I assume he means 100% payment of the tiles, not the complete job. That's how I do it anyway.

I always take 50% of the total price at start of job, 50% on completion.
It works for me and never had any real problems with it.
If a customer wasn't happy with this, I would explane that its a matter of trust on both sides.
Them trusting me to do a good job and me trusting them to pay. 50% at start seems a fair compromise on both sides.

As soon as you have your business up and running, you'll be straight in. Keep plugging away and you will be rewarded.

well I have a 3 day business course in December and then when I feel ready I think I can get up to £1,000 and carry on signing on for 13 weeks.... but that wont be yet and £1,000 wont even get me a van and 12 months insurance never mind all the decent tools I need pmsl!

If I'm supplying the tiles, which I like to, why wouldn't you want to earn an extra couple of hundred quid on a bathroom for making a phone call and organising delivery. I also don't even order the tiles until I have received full amount for them.

Dependant upon how many metres will determine if I want a deposit for labour and other materials. You need to cover your costs. Fortunately I have never been caught out with non-payment from customer, but then again, I don't sub to builders :smilewinkgrin:

That's what. Already told you guys about the dr... The respected member of the community. 5 weeks of prep leading to a text cancelling 100m2 the day before. With my mother dying and constant travel to manchester he has royally done me over.
