Time's Ran Out

Your trade price and the 'trade' price your customer is quoted should not be the same.
Adhesive etc - I price up on a metre price and base it on either wall or floor tiling and the metres I would achieve for that particular job from a bag.
Gone are the days - IMHO - when any customer will pay the retail price for a product.
I even had a client a couple of years ago who wanted to pay cash for my labour charges:thumbsup:, he also wanted me to give him a 25% discount because he insinuated that I would not be declaring it so he was entitled to the Tax element:lol::lol::lol:. You have to laugh at the cheek!

This all happened at the estimating stage and as his initials were H.M.Bagalot I decided that I would pay it into my offshore Tax account in the Seychelles:lol:
We went to Bogner for our holidays that year I believe.

I do pass on trade prices to customers to make my estimate more attractive. However, it’s not the full discount. It all depends on how big or small the job is. I priced a job yesterday and the trade discount came to £199. I passed on £113 to the customer. So that left £86 for me. I got the job this morning! This particular customer was quoted £30 delivery charge by Topps (that’s on top of full retail price for mats). So I said I will arrange free delivery. That’s another £30 saving for the customer. All I do is go via Topps website and get the stuff delivered free. I also use a cashback website and get another 6% back on what I spend. That works out at over £30 for me.......and saves me time/petrol & my back! Cheers Sean

My aim is to keep my turnover below the VAT radar, so I only supply tiles for a few clients. For most clients that ask if I can supply tiles I tend to recommend a tile shop and tell them that they will get a discount when I verify that I'm doing the fixing. This means that it becomes a selling tool for me, the tile shop like the fact that I'm passing them custom so they promote me to anyone looking for a fixer, my customer recommends me 'cos I save them money on their tiles and I remain below the VAT threshold. Seems like a win all round to me :thumbsup:.

i pass on some discount, but indirectly. i think most customers know about trade discount, so to avoid the discussion i say to people " some customers have preffered to buy the materials themselves, to control cash or for other reasons. feel free to do the same if you'd prefer as long as you buy the mats i specify". i then qoute them for the complete job inc materials. i find when they investigate retail prices and then look at the qoute it makes it look more attractive and i've costed the mats at trade + 50% or less if its needs to be very competetive. if people ask directly then i tell them i'll supply at trade + 25% to cover time and cost involved in going to buy the stuff.

always get the customer to get their own materials, i offer to pick them up for them if its a problem. know a few local tilers to me who charge obscene amounts for their materials. was tiling a house last year and they had a tiler doing another job previous to me being in their house. anyway he had ran out of something and told the customer he would need more materials. so the customer had gone to the supplier himself and bought the stuff and was shocked at how much the previous tiler had charged for it(from the same place) theres a difference between covering costs and purely ripping folk off imo. But thats why i suppose i was tiling their bathroom and not the previous guy.
