The boy's off tomorrow

My stepson Ross (18) is in the Royal Highland Fusiliers (2SCOTS) and he sets off on his first tour of Afghanistan tomorrow afternoon (Wednesday) from the barracks in Penicuik near Edinburgh.

Not surprisingly it's going to be a nervous six months while he's out there especially for his mother. We gave him a send off Sunday evening and that was emotional enough for her so I'm trying to prepare for how she'll be feeling for the next half year.

We're all quite proud of him and the way he's turned out especially as he was a worry a couple of years ago.

Does anyone on forum have sons, daughters,siblings in the forces and how is it when they're on active duty?

No, Sandy, I don't, but my son lives in Australia, and I still fret about him... I can imagine the worry, and like all worries it will come and go and change in intensity. Good luck and blessings for him, he must be a brave young man.

my mates lad is over there now, this is his second tour and he couldnt wait to get back, my mate and his wife put a brave face on it as they dont want him worrying about them when hes away but its obvious how upset they are.

I can't speak about being a parent to a sibling out in the position but I was a serving soldier in Belfast in the seventies......

No mobiles then but letters where diamond and little momentos from home while he's serving, you don't know how good that feels.

Just to add, He will have some of the best mates ever and there'll be looking out for each other.

When he left on Sunday evening I lost count how many told him to keep his head down...the thing is he's 6'6". An appropriate comment if ever there was

I think he'll definitely grow up when he realises it's for real, Doug. I'll be interested in seeing the changes.
