Hi there everyone.just been offered a full bathroom tile job, i.e walls and floor ( which are Already tiled). All the tiles seem well stuck down.would it be best to remove all tiles and start again or tile straight onto existing ceramic wall and floor tiles.I am a plumber by trade but tiling has become an add on to my business. all advise appreciated.

hi spooney,

you're best off removing the old tiles. even if they may seem sound and attached to the wall, you don't know how much extra weight you'll add with additional tiles and adhesive. you'll avoid any future accidents that may occur should the older set of tiles give way from the wall, by removing old.

have you thought about doing a tiling course to give you the basic skills to help you expand your plumbing business?

GRR

I have done a short tiling course (2 intensive. weekends) but its impossible tell you all you need to know.I think am in agreement with you on the full strip out though.

thanks for your advise. :juggle2:

tile on tile generally is an absolute no no unless you can be 100% sure that the old tiles are secure to the wall and that the wall behind the tiles will not fail. I doubt you could guarantee your customer of that, unless either you tiled the bathroom originally or the customer is prepared for you to not guarantee any of the additional tiling work you do.

most of the people on here will say to strip out the old. if you do it gently enough, you may not cause too much damage to the wall substrates behind and will therefore have to do less repair work before you begin the tiling.

if you need anymore help and advice, just shout up

Thanks again girl racer red.
I know the customer did the tiling 7 years ago, (he,s a bricky)but when asked if he,d
plied the floor he said he could not remember.it does not look like the tiles are standing proud of the landing carpet so it may not be plyed underneath, or even had a quick buttering up on the existing wall ties.
