Tiler messed up laying natural slate

Depending on the quality of the slate you can get warped pieces and that can cause lipping that is removed as already mentioned and also by giving a slightly wider joint and not washing to much grout out as hollow joints will make it look worse..

Just remove the worst bits with a chisel and it will sheer the top of another layer...then seal and it will look fine...that is the best thing with riven natural split and it doesn't show..

To be honest.............It looks ok to me. For riven slate.

I would'nt really say that that is bad workmanship.

Unless you go for honed slate...........you are going to get the slight lipping.

You will never get riven slate with all 4 edges the same thickness.

If you wanted flat..........you should have gone for Honed :dizzy2:


Although, in the picture, it looks flat..............believe me, there are more lips than a gospel choir

Thanks to all, I dressed the steps and sealed it with Lithofin and they look good at the moment ! My house is very old and they look like they have been there forever !

That lithofin slate seal is some great stuff mind.

hi sorry to see your floor , looks like very riven slate ,i would take up the bad ones , re- new them , knock them at by starting in the middle of the slate ,take up the adhesive ,lay again with a thinner slate ,but then thats me

I think he's happy with it now TT, no need to be taking slate up:yikes:
