Tiles for Around Bath and Basin, Adivie on my order?

Hi all,

We had our bathroom skimmed over 7 weeks ago. I have not yet applied a miss coat of paint to the walls and celling as I was planning on doing that once the tiles are fitted around the bath and basin as people on here suggested that's the best way to fix the tiles direct to the skimmed area.

So I am now ready to order everything and I wanted to know if I missed anything from my list or if any products are not correct.

Area to tile is around 2.1 sqm but I will order 3sqm so I have some spare.

30 x Brighton White Wall Tile 248x398 (Thickness 8.25mm)
1 x Mapei Primer G 1KG
1 x Mapei Ready Mixed Bathroom Wall Tile Adhesive (D2) 15kg
1 x Mapei Ultracolour Plus White (100) 5kg Flexible Wall/Floor Grout
or Mapei Kerapoxy White 2kg Epoxy Grout
1 x Tile Spacers 3mm Pack Of 250
2 x Tiletrim Chrome Square Edge 12mm
Mapesil AC White (100) Silicon 310ml
2 x Rubi Professional Sponge

1 x DIY Grout Float
1 x 8mm Square Notched Trowel


With regards to my list of items I have some questions

1, Does the wall skim need to be primed with Mapei G or can I tile without using this?

2, I was not sure on which grout to use. Some suggest epoxy which I have never used and others say Flexible Wall/Floor Grout

3, Is 3mm a standard tile spacer to use as its a small bathroom

4, Is Chrome Square Edge ok to use around the length of the top of the tiles and how do I work out which size to order. Above I have said 12mm but they stock a few sizes.

The D1 bucket adhesive will be fine straight onto the skim , just give it a brush to remove any surface dust , dispersion adhesive will grip better to un-primed skim..

The only other thing is the 8mm notched trowel , to deep for dispersion adhesive IMO.. 6mm will be fine.

With regards to the sqaure trim. How do i know which size sqaure trim do i use

Hi all,

Sorry to bring this up but just another question.

TileHQ Customer Service got back to my questions and said the following

1, You would need to Prime the plaster prior to fixing the tiles and Primer G is the best option in this case. Is this true?

2, I would personally use a 10mm trowel, however 8mm would surfice providing your walls are straight. People suggest 6mm but its for tiles only around bath?

So i am being told two things.

Another question is i am thinking of using the standard plastic trim instead of the sqaure type what size tile trim would be best for the plastic type.

If you've got a tub, the instructions on surface preparation will be on the tub - read it.
I'd use an 8mm trowel personally. Any bigger trowel needed, then I'd be binning the tub. 25x40 tiles I'd be using a slow bagged anyway. But that's another issue.
Trim - obviously get one that fits the tiles, 8-10-12mm?? Sure it'd be easy enough to take a tile to the shop to see hey?

I think you should be finding a good local pro to do your job for you

For the money you have spent on tools etc you would have been better getting a local pro in as stated above.
You will get more sound advice on here than you will through any technical department,

Trim will need to be 10mm, doesn't matter if its metal or plastic, trim has to be thicker than the tile itself.
Pushing it slightly with a tubbed addy but it will be ok,
No need to prime a wall if using a tubbed addy.

Haven't you started tiling yet Chris? !! - at only 2sqm you should have a go yourself. However, buying all that gear at retail price will put quite a dent in your pocket. Even at trade price it will work out a lot for your job. You will also have a lot of wastage (i.e. a load of grout/Silicon/adhesive left over).
Have you got a tile cutter?
Will you mitre the trim (i.e. cut at a 45deg angle or straight cut
How are you at siliconing?.

If I was tiling around your bath I would not be charging you for materials not used. I would use the adhesive/primer/grout/Silicon on other jobs (unless you were going for some obscure colour that I would have no chance of ever using again). So straight away you are saving money. Unless you have other tiling jobs around the house your trowel and grout float will just be taking up space in your shed.

Add up all the materials & tools & time.
Get a quote from a pro tiler.
I think you will be surprised.

I do understand that it would be a great sense of achievement doing it yourself - but at what cost?
