If you book a job in for a day then it has to be day rate..because you could of booked something else in otherwise....dave...

be it 2hrs or 5 hrs ...

Theres only one price for a job and thats the "Correct Price" If your new to tiling You can't just charge by the day @ £150 a day as the amount of meterage an inexperienced Tiler will be able to knock out will be a lot lot less than others.
So lets take as an example something like a diamond set kitchen in 4x4's (5sq mtr) including window reveals / box sections etc . An experienced Fixer will be able to complete this in a couple of days so lets say £300 quidish compared to an inexpierenced Fixer who might take twice as long, this doesn't meen you charge Double though as the job itself has a ceiling limit.

Yeah, I'm just starting out, wouldn't feel comfortable charging a day rate, I prefer to give an overall quote for the job, if I take longer (which I will) I see that as my problem and part of the learning curve. My main concern is doing the job right and recommendations should follow. Its highly unlikely that you will be fully booked up when you start out (like me) so if you take longer it doesnt really matter. The speed will come in time, thats when I will be ok with a day rate.

Excellent advice. i've just started out as well and I find it difficult to judge how long a job will take. I have noticed my speed picking up quickly though

just be carefull when you first start i priced 8 meters at £20 = £160 sounds good, but it took me two days and long days at that, it takes a while to build up the speed

another tip always go in with an estimate rather than the word quote if you run over you might be able to adjust the price but when first starting out allow yourself an extra day for any difficulties you might encounter no two jobs are the same. ps bal tech help line is on the bag or come on here:shades_smile: the more advice from as many different people you can get gives you a wider choice of solutions.

hi falcone, if you get a customer that wants a job doing and the meterage works out at say £80 then thats when your day rate kicks in, £150 plus materials, always try to supply everything yourself, if the customer has not picked the tile then send them to your supplier and give them a percentage of your discount, that way your earning before you start, to crocodile i would say be careful, your new to the trade and going on a course of any size will not mean you can say that you are a tiler that can take on any job, start small and gain on hands experience and slowly build up to more complex work, i feel pretty confident that you would be in the smelly brown stuff if you took on a 20 mtr victorian floor, having said that 2 or 3 years from now things would be different, try and buy the best cutters and tools you can afford, i only use sigma because i like them but they are expensive, last word( phew) dont underprice the established guys, they know what they are doing and with time and practice so will you...good luck pal
