Hi, would like to add my two pennerth if I may..
Yes there is work out there, yes it will be a struggle to get established, yes you may fail or you may succeed.
It would not be realistic to expect to complete a course, leave your cards in a tile shop, put an advert in the Yellow Pages and wait for the phone to ring.
You have to be prepared to market yourself by whatever means possible. Make trade contacts and leave customers satisfied. Forget about price, this is not relevent to being a success, as the sucessfull guys are the ones who get work on their reputation, and who also have gained the speed to be able to turn round jobs in a shorter time.
This all comes with practice and perseverance.
I am in my fourth year of tiling after completing a course, I have subsequently completed my NVQ level 2.
My business is not listed in any directory or phone book, my van is not sign written, I have not spent one penny on advertising. I am still working and relatively busy.
Reason for this is that I have got off my behind and pestered companies to give me a try. Have met and worked with other tilers and passed work their way, and got work back in return, same with other trades ( plasterers, plumbers, joiners etc )
Entering any type of employment is a risk nowadays, even the most safe looking prospect may mean redundancy at some stage or another. As a self employed person, to some degree you are the master of your own destiny and to succeed you must seize any opportunity and exploit it, whilst creating new opportunities at the same time. Never sit back on your laurels
