Hello everyone

I am a new member and would like to ask for your advice. I am getting different opinions on whether to strip the paint off the walls in my bathroom before treating it with BAL Prime APD for tiling. The seller said I don't need to, tilers said I do. Also if I have to can I use a heat gun (I understand chemical treatment is a no no)?

Second question is do I seal the polished marble tiles I've got BEFORE installing them or only after they are on the wall before grouting?

Thanks a lot

Hi stefko and welcome to tilersforums.com!

hello stefko, i would definately remove the paint, what is the paint onto...what substrate?

also i seal all stone before fitting onto walls:thumbsup:

:welcome: to the forum

What condition is the paint in? stick a bit of tape to the paint and see if any paint comes off when you pull it off if it does then I would say to remove all paint if it doesn't then sand it down and key the paint before you prime

Thank you all for the quick response.

The wall is made of concrete blocks.

United, sorry if I sound stupid, but what is "key the paint"?

The best way to describe it is to say score with a knife to give the adhesive more chance of getting a grip

You need to be careful of possible weight issues if you are fixing polished marble onto walls. Surely any painted surface will not support the weight of the tiles?

Some more information on your substrate would be useful please?

if the painted walls are in good nick and the paint isn't flacking off it will be fine.as for sealing the tiles, you'll be using a white adhesive any way with marble tiles, flexy on stud walls so sealing them grout then seal will be ok:thumbsup:

Hello and :welcome:..

Are the blocks skimmed to accept the paint...?

As Dave says, are the blocks skimmed? if so a heat gun could damage the plaster. also as stated skimmed walls will not take the weight. I would deffo remove all the paint. That then leaves the question,"are the blocks flat enough to take a tile?" very rare they are. 😳

I get it now , I'll do that then. I don't know what I would do without you guys, I really appreciate it.

For hanging marble on..?...

Hi all

The house was build in 1960 most of the walls including the one in question are made of black porous blocks (very old looking) with mortar. The plaster (where seen) on top is grey. The paint is old, but not flacking off, could not remove it with tape. I guess I would sand it off or key the pain?

The tiles are 12 mm thick but 4 mils of them are substance like hardiebacker and the marble is the top part only. They are lighter than solid marble.

Thak you again

These tiles are not known to me, from your description. Do you have any pics?

How many layers of paint do you think have been applied since the sixtys, I would remove the paint but wear a mask when doing so.
