Tiling on Particle Board Floor?

D

Dave Holland

Hi All,

New to the forum. I'm after a bit of advice because you guys seem to be the ones to ask! I'm about to lay ceramic floor tiles in a small bathroom with a particle board floor, I've had a lot of conflicting information as to whether it can or can't be done and whether the subfloor must be changed. I understand the particle board is not an ideal base because of its porosity, can it be sealed or waterproofed? If so what primer/membrane should I be using?

I've tackled a few larger floor tiling jobs on compound floors and the room I'm about to do is small so I'm not overly concerned about changing the sub-floor if this will produce the best result. If so, changed to what, marine ply?

ANY advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Dave

I would change it mate and use WPB ply 22 or 25m. Marine ply is also good stuff but very pricey. Or you could overboard it with Hardi board

Thanks Both,

That's a great help and pretty much confirmed what I was thinking. If I use either the cement backer board or ply, do I need any additional waterproofing or do they work well alone and which adhesive should be used?

Thanks again

Why does the floor need to be waterproof?
I would clean up floor, prime with suitable primer & fix Hardi 250 (6mm) with either a slow or fast set SPF adhesive & appropriate screws.
