Discuss Tiling on to marine ply or aquapanel? in the British & UK Tiling Forum area at TilersForums.com.

Evening.

As a plumber by trade I have got in to doing bits and bobs of tiling and then more and more. I have now been asked to give a quote for two shower cubicles and had a bit of a query.

One of the cubicles has come down. The previous install was straight on to plasterboard. The customer only wants me to put up some tiles for a year or so before they want to do the whole bathroom. As such I need to put the stud walls up around the cubicle with something that can be re-tiled on to in the not too distant future without losing all it's waterproofing. What is best for that?

I thought I could maybe use Marine Ply rather than aquapanel as it would not deteriorate as much when the tiles are taken off. Any comments/suggestions?

I suggested an alternative to tiles such as tile boards but it needs to be tiles! :mad2:

Cheers

plasterboard and homelux matting cheap and easy to install, and if installed correctly will last a year or ten years.

be sure to use a spf adhesive and the correct size trowel, and ensure you comb the trowel in the same direction if you use the matting.

this is all advice I have taken in from this site as I too am a plumber by trade now specialising in bathroom refurbs /wetrooms etc.

Time's Ran Out

Go the aquapanel route then if they don't alter it in 1+ years it will be good. If they alter it later it would give you the extra weight ratio you may need to tile on tiles. Or you can rip it all out and start again as it would cost about the same as marine plywood 12mm.
People have a habit of dangling short term repair/tart up jobs which they then expect to last a lifetime. If its worth doing - its worth doing properly and that's not to say that tiling onto protected plasterboard is not correct - if its properly sealed, using waterproof adhesive/grout and well tiled walls - your customer will have years of showers!
