Tiling onto Floor Grade Chipboard

Hi, Im currently tiling a kitchen floor 13m2. Its a new build house, approx 5 years old. The substrate is boarded in chipboard with a grey coating on the surface. I think its Floor Grade Chipboard please see pic attached.

Can you tile directly onto this or is laying ply a must? If so what thickness. Can I get away with 6mm or 9mm?

Ive been told to just coat it with PVA 1:5, but im not confident this is the correct thing to do. Can someone please advise?

Ill be laying ceramic tiles.

No to pva and tiling directly onto chipboard, the grey coating is not one I've personally come across

Some other tradesmen I know tld me PVA would be fine, Ive also read it on the back of some adhesive, 'For porous materials, Prime with PVA'. Everything ive read says this is incorrect.

Ive never seen this coating on the chipboard before, thought it might be there to act as a moisture barrier. The floor is ridgid, so I was going to use 6mm wbp ply board just to be sure.

This is my first floor tiling job so I dont want to mess it up!!

I would use 6mm Cement board and not 6mm ply

6mm is to thin, if your going to screw ply 12mm but the british standard states it is 15mm.

Where did you do your course

most likley laminate / vinyl or plastic coating on the chip board, donot tile directly onto it .
over board with ply or cement sheeting.

Hi Dazatko and :welcome: chipboard in any shape or form is not a suitable substrate for tiling. I would over-board with 15mm exterior ply and if height allows, glue and screw a cement board (Hardie- backer or the like) just to be sure

pretty much as above,15mm ply or 6mm cement boards if the floor is satable and you have height restrictions.

and yes it is a waterproof barrier,it is more common in scotland but can be seen in green and blue elsewhere
