tiling onto underfloor heating

hi all,,a question if i may. customer is laying an underfloor heating mat type in his parents 2 bathrooms and wants me to tile directly on top of these
,,is it best to apply the adhesive directly to the back of each tile and lay as oppose to applying it to the floor and risk damaging the mat with trowel? also if so whats the best adhesive for doing this type of work? cheers

Hi

Underfloor heating should be taped down then gone over with a leveler using the back of your trowel. When this is dry you then have a flat surface and wires are protected from your trowel.

hi i thought so,,was told to put a self leveller on top of it yes? the customer has been advised this but reckons hes used a tiler before that has just used adhesive directly on top of the mat? is there such a product? or has someone winged it so to speak?

An experienced tiler can tile over UFH mats without screeds, if the mats are secured.....Gaz

Oh yes please dont get me wrong you can use a flexible adhesive straight over it no probs. I think the best way would be as above tho.

You can use adhesive if you so wish, i have many times but i do prefer the levelling method. Sometimes it helps if the job is being pushed. The builder would see levelling as extra cost and time, but really cost is not really a factor. yo will use more adhesive if you lay direct than if you levelled. I hope that makes sense. It also takes a little longer to lay the tiles using the pure adhesive method IMO.
If you are worried about the metal trowel causing damage then obtain a plastic version.

thanks all for your info,,so a flexible adhesive appllied directly onto a well secured taped mat should be fine then? just a bit concerned of damage to the wires from the trowel,never really seen plastic trowels sold anywhere?
