Time between sealing travertine and grouting?

Hi

I have laid my fist travertine tiles on the floor and walls of my bathroom, i ahve cleaned them and are now looking to seal them prior to grouting, how long do you have to wait for the sealant to dry/cure before grouting? Once grouted I am going to apply a second coat of sealant.

What sealer are you using.?

Some you can pre-seal with and grout shortly after and then seal to saturation after grout clean up.

it depends on the manufacturers instructions, they do vary, just do as it says on the tin. make sure they are really clean before sealing or you'll seal in any dirt/residue

I use Fila products. Pollished & honed are slightly different. Depending on environment, drying time can vary. Just follow manufacturers instructions

I seal Travertine after grouting and having filled in all pits, I belive it to be the best way as I think the pits should be filled before tile is sealed.

I now use Universeal spray sealers exclusively, so much time saved, no rubbing out streaks etc & it drys in about an hourish on Trav

I'm not familiar with the specifications, but are the spray on sealers just a topical sealer? Surely an impregnating sealer would be better to use??

Havent used it on slate yet, still had some Hagesan stuff the last job I done.

The colour intensifying Universeal spray would be great im sure and ther stuff can be applied to damp stone so no hanging around either.

The Universeal stuff has completley changed the way I seal so much more efficent.

I use all in one (grout protector as well) for porcelain & the stone version. the applicator is a tenner I think.

Ctd London rd is where I get it from.

These aerosol sealers IMO are ok for grout sealing and the odd kitch splash back to stone borders etc but full stone installations should be sealed to saturation and you cannot do that with an aerosol sealer...

Just my take on it and yes i have tried them but i prefer to leave a customers job thoroughly sealed and not just a lick over from an aerosol can.

Think you will find Dave, I give it a bit more than a lick with a can. I have been using spray sealer for about 6 months without problem & I see it as the way foward and about time too.

You cannot saturate stone from an aerosol can IMO.. but that is my opinion and i am entitled to that

But if it works for you then that is great...

I get where you are both coming from. I think the spray would be handy for tumbled stones & some slates but I think I'll still stick to foam roller & tray on granites, conglomerate marbles & polished marbles etc

Had seen them before Universeal came to CTD, there stuff is significantly diffrent from what came before & is an innovative, New,quality product.

2 (GOOD) coats with an applicator is more than enough, saves a lot of faffing around, has a streak free finish, completely dry in a fraction of the time, no more you cant use your floor for 3 days mrs whilst i seal your floor/walls.

Sprayed a sheet of newspaper with a coat of all in one after 30 mins it held water, cant see matt stone pulling that one off after 12 hours.

If it's unfilled trav, I seal after grouting. I also keep a spray can of sealer in the truck for small jobs, but I can't bring myself to use a spray can on an entire stone room or large floor, just way too costly. Larger jobs I use one of those graden sprayers, with the pump action, tip my liquid sealer in and off I go.

The particular spray sealer in question is definately an impregnator sealer, which as you say is the correct sealer and not a topical.

Aerosol sealers are not ideal for sealing large areas, it would be more difficult to acheive a thorough coverage when spraying the stone surface from an aerosol.

The new technology of this type of impregnator means you do not need to saturate the stone to achieve the desired stain protection, it also means the impregnator dries quicker allowing for faster application and completion of job.

I have used them and agree but like you say Jason , not ideal for larger areas.

But sealer is sealer and a stone must be fully sealed for a longer life IMO.

Certain stones accept a lot more sealer than others , hence why I seal to saturation. This way I know it is right.

I watched your stone foam video , interesting product.

You are correct and I certainly like the idea of saturation, for obvious reasons Dave.

I know it sounds bias but Stone Foam is excellent product, let me know if you ever want to give it a go it makes life so much easier using a flat mop application.

The LTP product is a cleaning product in an aerosol, the one we are talking about is a colour enhancing stone impregnator.

The names are the only things which are the same..
