Fred

I've had a phone call from my local topps manager this morning, asking if I was prepared to do their insurance work and another work ( can't remember what he called it, but the prices per m2 are set by topps)

I'm seeing him tomorrow, but do any of you do this sort of work for them? I am a topps fitter, albeit, hardly get any work via them.

i think they might mean TAX grumps as in self employed and they take tax off and give you a chitty or piece of paper to confirm this.....in other words SUB CONTRACTING for them.
You may be right Bri, but insurance companies always ask the claimant if they are VAT registered, so they can pay without any VAT. I know this is slightly different to waht Dad was saying, but you never know with some companies.

The insurance company pay them a standard national rate for the fitting via a credit note given to the customer. I had priced a job at £250 to lay a couple of floors with UFH in one without realising how the system works. It was only two days work and all profit as I am a Topps fitter too, so customer gets everything from them. The money I would get via this insurance credit note was actually double my quote , which took up half of the customers credit note, so they walked out of the store unhappy as my quote was different and they thought Topps were pocketing the difference. Had to talk them round and tell them to buy enough gear to leave £250 on the credit note and that would come to me.

Oh boy was i wrong when I said the above earlier....:furious3:
Topps charge the customer a standard rate for whatever work you do, depending on what it is. You will then recieve a portion of this, not all of it - eg the customer would have been charged about £530 in my job's case, but I would have been paid about £360 of it. Any amount the customer spends over the credit note, they pay to Topps (I think) and then we get paid from them. As a result, I think I will lose this job now because half of the customer's credit note would go to Topps as fitting charge. :mad2:

sounds like TOPPSare on to a winner again Chris...but if you are happy with the regular work then its up to you buddy.

Sounds a bit like the way B&Q work for fitting kitchens.........

They call it mandate work. I have been given a list of prices etc, very low, but its work. A bit like me giving a job to another tiler and giving him so much of the payment.

When a supplier promises to pay me for holiday pay, take over the running costs of my van and replenish my tools, I'll be happy to discuss working under their rates. Until then, I'll be the best judge as to what I need to charge.

Just my opinion

wise words

The customer I was sent to ordered the most expensive travertine, totalling upto the insurance cost. He also wanted extras, like flooring removed etc, leveling etc.......

I put my price in, he has now gone for a non-UK worker.............it really gets to me...............:mad2::mad2::mad2:

They can only deduct VAT if you are VAT registered, otherwise your invoice would be a VAT exempt supply, with no VAT portion on your bill.

UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have done about ten insurance jobs for Topps and had VAT taken off the totals for all of them, I did wonder about me not being VAT registered. The price list Topps give out is inclusive of VAT so the price I received after completiob was that minus 17.5%. I will be having words.
