Travertine and Plasterboard query.

Hi, just joined, hello everyone!

I would like some advice if possible please.

I am a bathroom fitter and have a travertine job to do. The walls are 12.5mm unskimmed plasterboard screwed to 400mm centres timber with 1 noggin half way up the wall. Moisture resistant board is in the shower area which I plan to tank.
I will also seal the tiles after fitting, then after grouting.
Do you think it will be ok to use 12mm travertine(400x200 approx, honed and filled) on this board? I realise it will be close to or slightly over the 32kg sq/m recommendation.
Do I need to add any more noggins?

how much do the tiles weigh per m2...don't forget you have to allow approx. 2kg per m2 for the adhesive and grout..

Hi, thanks for the reply. I don't know what the weight is per sq/m, how do I work it out? Will do a search and see if I can find the answer.

Just used an online materials calculator which says the tiles are 30kg per sq/m. Not sure how accurate it is though.

you need to make sure you have plenty of noggins to make sure the plaster board is well fixed , but the weight limits are for what the plaster board can take, regardless of how well its fixed....if you get what I mean..

god knows...lol

I just look at it this way .....10kg bag of adhesive will do approx. 5m2 of tiling, so that equals 2kg per meter..

10kg bag to do 5 m2 of tiles Andy, more like 2 to 2 1/2m2 per 10kg bag if you get the plasterboard walls i have to go on.

The boards must be rigid and I note that you are tanking the walls which is a must. The weight of Travertine tile and adhesive would be in the region of 32kgs/m2. However, be careful the market is flooded with cheap Travertine mainly cross cut which is full of voids and fillers. Travertine being a soft stone is likely to attract soap residue and dirt it is not the best finish for areas constantly in contact with water. Bob Howard MBE
