Hi GTC,

Do you live in a block of flats? are these sound proofed? Also have you taken up the whole floor to inspect? It is common for this type of installation to have services running through the polystyrene. Have you noticed any metal trays that may have pipes or cable running through them?

The polystyrene is there for a reason....insulation..that is what is known as a floating floor...The quickest option and probably the cheapes is to frame the floor out( fixed) and then lay 22mm ply and keep the insulation...Then use an uncoupling membrane for thermal stress issues associated with timber floors and stone tiles...

do you mean in the same way as a stud petition wall?

Yep....but but you have to protect the frame from damp..as the DPM is under the polystyrene..

Floating floors like this can also be used in flats for the purpose of sound proofing so if not on the ground floor won't always have a DPM. just something to think about, but I'm not sure if GTG lives in a flat yet
