Hi again,

Seen ther mapei ultracolour on screwfix and it comes in 5kg bags, does anyone know what sort of area this would cover?
Also is there a good adhesive to use from there so i can order all in one go, single part flexible adhesive was suggested but the description on there doesnt go into that detail

Many thanks

Ian
The Ultracolour Plus coverage depends on the size of your tile and your joint width. There is a calculation on the Mapei website to help you decide how much you would need.

I have just looked at the Screwfix website and didn't see anything other than Mapei adhesives that may be suitable. Unfortunately I have never used them so I am not familier with which product may be suitable for you to use on you floor. Hopefully, one of the guys who use the stuff will come on later and give advice.

Walls are slightly different Ian. The reason you use the big trowels on floors is because you need to achieve a solid bed fixing, i.e. no voids under the tiles which would create weak points in the floor.

For walls, generally you don't need 100% coverage unless you are in a wet area in which solid bed coverage is adviseable.

It is a general rule to try and match the trowel notch size roughly to the thickness of the tile. Much also depends how flat the walls are. Very flat walls give a much better chance of getting good coverage without problems and you can then ease down on the notch size a little. If the surface is uneven, a bigger notch makes it easier to get better coverage. you also need to take into account the overall size of the tile as well.

There has been a large amount of discussion on trowel sizes in the forums already. If you do a search in the box at the top, it will bring up loads of threads. It makes interesting reading.

Got all my gear now, layed the ply and dry layed and cut all my tiles.

Have the Bal single part flexible adhesive to stick them.

The data sheet says 16 hours before grouting but doesnt mention any other times.
Is it 16 hours until traffic in your experience or can i get on it before handas in need to put the toilet in for the night time for the kids.

Hi Ian, the 16 hours is really the time you need to wait to safely traffic the tiles. If you move about on them prior to that you are in danger of dislodging them. This is the very reason the pros use rapid setting stuff because you can get essential services back into action quicker. It is more difficult to use though for the inexperienced as it goes off in the bucket much quicker so you have to mix in smaller batches to cut down waste. You are also under more pressure to get your tiles set correctly first time as adjustment time is also shorter.
