UFH Backer board etc...

Hi again all,

I was just wondering what you guys do when laying elec UFH onto timber floor (floorboards), that has been secured then overboarded with hardibacker.

Do you then lay an additional insaulation board on top.?

Or do you just lay the UFH over the backer board and then tile or latex then tile.?

Personally if I was putting ufh onto timber i would have used ply instead of the hardie and then used isulation boards on top of the ply. The Hardie doesn't add strength and has little in the way of thermal insulation. Without the heating and if the floor was solid then yes, hardie every time. It is normal to cover the UFH with slc which is good to tile onto thereby alleviating the need for hardie as the tiling surface...if you see what I mean?

I have the same issue, but am concerned with the resuling step caused by the ply, insulation, cable addy and tile!
So what thinkness ply would you use?

Absolute minimum of 12mm, but 18 would be better, it depends how solid your floor is. Any deflection at all and it should really be 18mm.

As long as the floor is solid enough then i would use hardi boards...wood insulates to a certain degree and you do not loose heat on timber floors like you can on concrete ones..

But then again if the floor is solid then you could just use a 10mm insulation board direct onto the substrate..with required fixings.

The team at topps said to just use the insulation boards, but I don't feel they bring much to the party strength wise.
They will have a towel radiator in the room as well, so I'm going down the backerboard route. If anyone really disagrees, please tell me now!

If the floor is solid then you don't need the boards to strengthen.. just to add a better substrate to tile too or insulate..
