Spiralsmile

Hi all,

I am having my kitchen redone and will be installing Gris slate from either
blue sky stone or gris riven from mandarin stone (600*300*10mm).

Kitchen is 10.5m2 in total with 6.5m2 of open floor. House is a Victorian
terrace.

There is an existing screed laid on polythene (I’m guessing 75mm thick) its
smooth, level in good nick.

My build up plan is this:

1) 10mm ecoboard set on a flexible adhesive

2) Uheat - elektra loose cables (recommend by uheat i need 110m - 1100w)

3) Self leveler approx 6-8mm

4) slate on flex adhesive

I have allowed for a 35mm build up in total (could stretch to 40mm if
necessary)

so the questions:

1) does screed need anything doing prior to laying insulation? no need for
primer etc?

2) Minimum depth of self leveler over cables (I’m assuming they have quoted for
standard cables)

3) Self leveler? (Mapaei Fibreplan is mooted a lot here)

4) self leveler prime needed?

5) Adhesive recommendations for slate?

6) Slate sealing recommendations or pointers to relevant posts.

7) Grout recommendations.

any advice or tips would be gratefully recieved.

Hi.

1) does screed need anything doing prior to laying insulation? no need for
primer etc?

Clean and prime with an acrylic primer or dilute SBR.

2) Minimum depth of self leveler over cables (I’m assuming they have quoted for
standard cables)

Ecoboards are uncoated so I would suggest that they will compress and ruin your smoothing compound, breaking it into little bits! Use coated boards, a few quid more but a lot less pain!
I would estimate an average depth of around 5mm if cables are 3mm.

3) Self leveler? (Mapaei Fibreplan is mooted a lot here)

I like Mapei renovation screed / Weber FloorFlex and Tile Master Level Flex.

4) self leveler prime needed?

Not really but it won't hurt - I generally would - especially if dusty / dirty.

5) Adhesive recommendations for slate?

BAL Stone and Tile PTB would be my 1st choice.

6) Slate sealing recommendations or pointers to relevant posts.

Natural look? Universeal Ultimate stone sealer
Gloss (looks a bit naff imo) Universeal Slate sealer

7) Grout recommendations.
