Here's the job, customer wants UFH under a slate floor in a converted barn.

1, How does slate compare with ceramics for heat transfer?

Can't inspect floor yet due to the fact the room is full of 'stuff', but have been informed that under the chipboard (that I can see) is the original barn floor, rough concrete with gullies for washing down. so Q2 is

2, probably looking to raise floor an 1 1/2" / 2" to bring it back to current level so do I get a new floor laid,(get the builders in) then use self leveller/backer board etc OR is there a leveller out there too give me 3/4" depth. (tiles etc to take up the rest

Into unknown terrority here lads

I did a barn conversion in January with ufh..( piped version ) and was ok with slate...check with ufh supplier to which wattage system you need....back to the floor...get the builders to screed the floor if possible .. quicker and cheaper than self levelling...use insulated backer boards then there will be no heat loss through the substrate...expensive to do but customer will get cost back within a couple of years with the savings made on heating the floor.....dave..

Hi FH,
if you go on the nu-heat website there is some good info on floor construction, if you register on there it also give you access to their information library.

Also try polyplumb, i have installed their system and was really impressed with it compared to others i've used,
