un-doing a good job

Hi Everyone

I had a builder convert a small room to a wet room, for use by a disabled relative. To keep the cost down I did the tiling on the walls. 6" square cream flat tiles. I was really pleased with it and the builder was kind enough to say he had seen professionals not do as well.

Time passed and it seemed a good idea to put up grab rails. Well, the original wall had been an external stone built wall and was wider at the bottom than the top so the builder had used 'dot and dab' to attach the gyproc to the wall. I found a fixing that should have opened in the gap between the stone wall and the tiled gyproc. The fixing needed holes drilled about 10mm in diameter and there were three at each end of the grab rail. The holes went well but the fixing did not have enough space to open and then the relative died so the holes and grab rail were no longer needed.

What I want to do is remove the two drilled tiles and replace with new tiles. (I have got spare tiles) How do I get those two drilled tiles off the wall without damaging the other tiles and the gyproc structure behind the tiles. It is not like taking a broken tile off as apart from the drilled holes they are otherwise sound and it is not like taking a tile off a solid wall.

Suggestions would be really appreciated.

You will need to remove the grout from around the tiles first, use a grinder or a multitool (Fein/Bosch). Then score an X across the tile (a grinder would be best for this), then prise the pieces out gently, the holes drilled in the tiles may help you remove them with a screwdriver.

Tbh, it's just like taking a Brocken tile off the wall. With it being 150mm2 tiles, they will be rather thin so I would take care in the removal as there is a good chance the other tiles could chip or crack. I'm afraid it's a hammer & bolster to remove them. You could take a grinder to them to ease the removal. Depending on the type of adhesive used, there is a chance the plasterboard could be damaged so just take care.

instead of using a grinder you could drill holes in an x shape.plasterboard will probably be slightly damaged,if its in an area where the water will get to it then you might need to tank this area.
