I went to look at a job yesterday, it was on the limit of how far I'm willing to travel (scotch corner side of kirkby stephen side Dave and Faith!), anyway, all I could do was give the customer ( an elderly gentleman, project managing a really big barn conversion) a bad feeling about what he wanted me to price for.
Main bathroom, approx 40 m2; problem being walls have been drylined then skimmed, customer wants 12mm thick trav floor to ceiling:mad2:
Floor not really seen this before, a first floor bison beam screeded floor, with timber screeds @ 400mm centres and water borne ufh incorporated. Joiners intend to overlay this with 9mm plywood:yikes::yikes::yikes:, had to suggest an insulation board instead (open to advice as to which brand?)
Lastly all the flaming plastered walls have been emulsioned too!!
The customer was really quite good about it really, he was pragmatic enough to realise the problems are better to be raised prior to installation rather than post installation, so there is a plus side to the story. The downside is that I have to incorporate all this into my price:thumbsdown:and travel 65 miles a day if i get the job, (he seemed eager to book me in!)
anyway, the point being, stick to your guns, tell the customer what is right, and not just what they want to hear as it'll save confusion/misunderstanding later:thumbsup:

One of the bathrooms ive done this week, when I qouted for the tiling aspect of a complete rip out, re board and refit job I explicitley told her not to have it skimmed, just to put up cement boards and plasterboards and I'd tank the bath shower and surrounding area. Explaining to her about weight issues etc and that she was weakening the wall having it skimmed, and wasting her money on what was unneccessary.

She ignored my advice and had it plasterboarded and skimmed I went round to drop some materials off the week before I started to find it all skimmed, :mad2::mad2:

I refused flat out to put the trav up and she had to go change them for ceramics, when i asked her why she'd had it skimmed she replied, I know you said not to and I was wasting my money and have had to change from the tiles I wanted, but it looked nicer skimmed!! :mad2::mad2: The tiling was floor to ceiling.

Not to sound too sexist, but that comment could have only come from a woman

Id love to do that, but unfortunately I would lose most of my jobs to plumbers and such like who would tile onto paint. Ive seen people just scratch the paint a bit before tiling aswell! Shocker :)
