Upstand shower trays

Tilers Forums Official Sponsors

Hi. Just thinking about shower trays. Do shower trays with an integrated upstand require sealing where tiles sit upon the tray?
I wondered if this type of tray (if Silicon is not required) would be better suited to a bathroom that has a history of Silicon going mouldy where the tiles touch the tray.
Many thanks

Yes they do need Silicon- are you thinking of doing the work yourself?

Better get reading or you’ll have a disaster on your hands…

To prevent mould: use a good quality Silicon and apply it properly (no licked fingers…), ventilate the room properly, heat the room properly.

Thanks for your reply. Would I correct in assuming that you could actually seal the gap between the back of the tile and the upstand.
Applying this method would mean that the Silicon would be out of sight, but still seal the gap from splashes or capillary action.

That is not what I do, I tile down leaving a 2mm gap at the bottom as usual. Then Silicon this and finish using a fugi tool as usual.
Your method would probably work, except there would be no way of checking the condition of the seal and knowing when it needed to be redone- so I would not recommend your method
